Many of these methods had a mathematical foundation, revealing the close relationship between numbers and sound. This relationship is so close that the two subjects were traditionally considered to be fundamentally connected – musicians and mathematicians were thought to be one and the same. Although the prominence of mathematics in music subsided somewhat since the time of the Baroque, it has always been important to music theorists.
To the present day, sound remains a fascinating subject for many mathematicians who have made significant contributions to our modern principles of tuning. The Circle of Fifths has a mathematical basis, but more importantly, it shows that music is fundamentally a closed system. All keys relate to all other keys, all notes relate to all other notes. Perhaps one of the reasons the circle of fifths has persisted so is because it is such an elegant model of an interconnected universe.
The purpose of our Circle of Fifths Book, The Musical Circle of Fifths from Pythagoras to present day is to provide a complete overview of the Circle of Fifths. It will hopefully have something of interest for everyone – from the beginning music student to the more advanced musician looking to expand his or her tonal vocabulary. If it stimulates the imagination and provides new outlooks, it will have met its goal.
